The Mexican writer Manuel Payno (1820-1894) represented a brilliant generation of writers and journalists, along with Ignacio Ramírez, Guillermo Prieto, and Francisco Zarco, alongside whom he participated in the literary and political struggles of the turbulent period in Mexican history that encompassed the dictatorship of Santa Anna, the conflict with Texas, the Liberal Reform, the French Intervention, and the Porfiriato. Between 1889 and 1891, in Santander, Spain, he wrote his best-known work, *Los Bandidos de Río Frío* (The Bandits of Río Frío), a splendidly narrated serial novel in which he masterfully portrayed an epic scene depicting the beginning of Mexico's life as an independent nation.
